7 October, a commemorative planting of a birch tree in memory of Anna Politkovskaya would take place in the Botanic garden in Sheffield, Central England. The councilmen will take part in the ceremony, headed by the lord mayor.   

The initiative of that way of commemorating our killed colleague was inspired by the Sheffield branch of Amnesty International UK that watches the human rights issues, including on the post-soviet space. In their special statement, the human rights activists noted Anna Politkovskaya’s devotion and fearlessness, shown when covering the topic of the war in Chechnya, also investigating the cases of infringement on human rights. They also reminded of the lack of political will by the Russian authorities about the question of putting to justice all those – without exception – who was involved in that abominable crime.
